Speakers at a discussion marking World Day against Child Labour 2026 stressed the need for coordinated efforts by the government, industries, families, and society to eliminate child labour and ensure children have access to education and healthy development.
The programme, organised by the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE), was held on Monday at Chattogram Circuit House following a rally. This year’s theme was, “Say No to Child Labour, Ensure Decent Working Conditions.”
Addressing the event, Chattogram Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Mian said child labour is not only a labour law issue but also a social challenge that deprives children of their childhood, education, and opportunities for personal development. He said protecting children’s rights is essential for building a humane and prosperous society.
He noted that economic hardship often contributes to child labour and said social protection initiatives could help reduce financial pressures on vulnerable families, enabling more children to remain in school.
The deputy commissioner also called on employers to improve workers’ living standards and ensure better opportunities for their children. He urged business owners to employ qualified adults instead of children and emphasised that eliminating child labour requires the participation of employers, labour organisations, teachers, parents, journalists, development partners, and the wider community.
During the programme, the district administration announced support for the education of a talented underprivileged child and encouraged affluent members of society to assist other disadvantaged but promising children.
Deputy Director of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) Nurul Haque, Assistant Commissioner of Chattogram Custom House Imran Hossain, Eastern Zone Coast Guard Commander Abu Nesar Saleh Ahmed, and Abu Haider, a director of the Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry, among others attended the programme.
