Train services between Bangladesh and India, suspended since 2024, may resume soon as authorities of the two countries have reportedly made progress in restoring cross-border rail connectivity.

According to a report published by Indian news outlet Zee 24 on Thursday, preparations are underway to restart the Mitali Express, which operates between Dhaka and Kolkata. The report said the Indian Ministry of Railways is expected to take a final decision on the matter shortly.

It said railway officials from Bangladesh and India recently held discussions on resuming the service and gave a positive indication for its restart.

The report added that inspections of railway security and other technical preparations have largely been completed. The train schedule and ticket booking dates are expected to be announced officially within the next few days.

The report also noted that India resumed issuing tourist visas to Bangladeshi citizens last week, a move seen as a positive step towards restoring bilateral travel.

It further said that the resumption of visa services could pave the way for the gradual restoration of other cross-border passenger train services, including the Maitree Express and Bandhan Express.
