SYLHET, July 3: Jamaat-e-Islami Central Majlish-e-Shura member and Sylhet district ameer Maulana Habibur Rahman on Thursday called for building a discrimination-free state in line with the spirit of the July uprising.
Speaking at a workers' training workshop organised by the Osmaninagar upazila unit of Jamaat-e-Islami at a local auditorium, he said the July uprising had been sparked by discrimination and injustice perpetrated by the then state machinery.
"The people, exhausted by injustice and misrule, united in support of truth and justice," he said.
Describing the July uprising as a historic milestone in resisting injustice and authoritarian rule, Habibur Rahman said the sacrifices of more than 2,000 people and the injuries and disabilities suffered by thousands more should inspire efforts to establish a state free from discrimination.
He said Jamaat-e-Islami is working to build a society based on justice and fairness and urged party activists to play a leading role in that effort.
The workshop was chaired by Sohrab Ali, Ameer of Osmaninagar Upazila Jamaat, and moderated by its secretary Anhar Ahmed.
Among the speakers were Prof Abdul Hannan, Nayeb-E-Ameer of Sylhet district Jamaat; Alhaj Zainal Abedin, District Secretary and former upazila chairman; Principal Nazrul Islam, assistant secretary of the district unit; Jahedur Rahman Chowdhury, a Jamaat leader from Sylhet Sadar and the party's prospective candidate for Osmaninagar Upazila chairman; and Hakim Nazim Uddin, training secretary of the district unit.
