BARISHAL, July 3: Judge Ashraf Uddin of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal on Thursday sentenced a man to death for raping a minor girl in 2023, an assault that left the victim pregnant and resulted in the birth of a child who is now three years old.
Alamgir Sikder, 52, was also fined Tk 1 lakh in the verdict. The court further directed the district administration to bear the cost of maintenance for the child and its mother.
Alamgir, son of late Abdur Rashid Sikder, hailed from Purba Kesobkathi Village under Uzirpur Upazila in the district.
Public Prosecutor (PP) Advocate AKM Shamsul Huq said the victim and Alamgir were neighbours, and the girl, then a ninth-grader at a madrasa, used to visit his house. She went to Alamgir’s home on March 3, 2023, where she was raped. The girl later became pregnant as a result of the assault, the prosecutor said.
The victim’s father filed a case with Uzirpur Police Station on May 21, 2023. The investigating officer submitted a charge sheet on May 31, 2024, naming Alamgir as the sole accused. The court handed down the verdict after recording testimony of six witnesses.
