Eight Become Four

Analysing the teams best placed to reach the World Cup semi-finals

The FIFA World Cup has entered the quarter-final stage, where every mistake carries the weight of elimination. The eight remaining teams have already survived the pressure of the knockout rounds, but only four will earn the right to continue their journey towards football's greatest prize.

The quarter-final line-up promises a fascinating mix of established giants and fearless challengers. On paper, some teams appear to hold a slight advantage, yet World Cup history repeatedly reminds us that reputations rarely guarantee victory.

France vs Morocco:
Experience Against Belief
France enter the tie as favourites thanks to their squad depth, attacking quality and experience in high-pressure knockout football. Kylian Mbappé remains one of the tournament's most dangerous players, while France possess match-winners across every area of the pitch.

Morocco, however, have built their campaign on tactical discipline and defensive resilience. They rarely allow opponents space between the lines and remain lethal on the counterattack. Slight edge: France.

If Morocco can frustrate the French for long periods, another upset is possible, but France's attacking depth could ultimately make the difference.

England vs Norway:
Bellingham Against Haaland
England have steadily grown stronger with each match, displaying balance in defence, control in midfield and composure under pressure.

Norway, meanwhile, arrive with enormous confidence after eliminating Brazil. Erling Haaland has become one of the tournament's defining figures, but Norway's success has been built on organisation as much as individual brilliance.

The key battle could unfold in midfield. If England control possession and deny Haaland quality service, they should have the upper hand. If Norway win the transition battle, Haaland can punish even the smallest defensive mistake. Slight edge: England.

Spain vs Belgium:
Possession Meets Precision
Spain continue to rely on patient possession and positional football, attempting to wear opponents down before creating openings.

Belgium offer a different challenge. Their direct attacking style, physical presence and clinical finishing make them extremely dangerous, particularly when opponents commit numbers forward.

This could become the most tactically balanced quarter-final, where efficiency matters more than possession statistics.
Slight edge: Spain, though Belgium possess enough attacking quality to change the match within minutes.

Argentina vs Colombia:
Champions Face a Rising Challenger
Argentina continue to combine experience with composure, qualities that become increasingly valuable deep into a World Cup.

Colombia have impressed with their organisation, intensity and confidence throughout the tournament. They are unlikely to fear Argentina and possess the pace to threaten on the counterattack.

Even so, Argentina's ability to manage knockout matches gives them a narrow advantage. Slight edge: Argentina.

Who Could Reach the Semi-finals?
Based on current form, tactical balance, squad depth and knockout experience, the four teams that appear best placed to reach the semi-finals are France, England, Spain and Argentina.

Yet this World Cup has already witnessed Brazil's elimination by Norway and Morocco's remarkable run to another quarter-final, proving that surprises remain an essential part of football's biggest tournament.

As the competition enters its decisive phase, the difference between victory and defeat may come down to a single goal, one tactical adjustment or one moment of brilliance. The quarter-finals are where dreams become reality for some-and end in heartbreak for others.
