CHATTOGRAM, July 8: Cargo handling at Chattogram Port and liquefied natural gas (LNG) unloading at Moheshkhali floating terminal remained heavily disrupted on Wednesday as continuous heavy rain and rough seas, triggered by active monsoon conditions, battered the coast for a second consecutive day.
Loading and unloading of bulk cargo at the outer anchorage of Chattogram Port remained suspended, while operations in the lighterage area also came to a halt because of adverse weather.
However, the Chattogram Port Authority (CPA) said container handling at the port's terminals continued without interruption.
CPA Secretary Refayet Hamim said cargo handling from 43 vessels anchored at the outer anchorage had been suspended due to rough sea conditions, although container operations at the port terminals were continuing normally.
The rough weather also disrupted LNG unloading at the Moheshkhali Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU), affecting the country's gas supply.
According to a message issued by Petrobangla, the supply of regasified LNG (RLNG) from the Moheshkhali FSRU has dropped by around 300 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) after adverse maritime conditions prevented a scheduled LNG cargo from commencing unloading operations.
Petrobangla said the supply shortfall would result in low gas pressure for consumers across all categories nationwide.
The disruption is expected to continue until weather conditions improve, allowing the delayed LNG cargo to resume unloading safely.
