Mbappé Inspires France Past Morocco as Les Bleus March into WC Semi-finals

Published : Saturday, 11 July, 2026 at 12:00 AM
France underlined their championship credentials with a commanding 2-0 victory over Morocco on Thursday night, ending the Atlas Lions' impressive World Cup journey and securing a place in the semi-finals for the third consecutive tournament.

The quarter-final at Gillette Stadium was billed as a battle between France's attacking firepower and Morocco's disciplined defence, and for an hour the African side lived up to its reputation. Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou produced one of the saves of the tournament by denying Kylian Mbappé from the penalty spot after a lengthy VAR review awarded France an early spot-kick.

That moment gave Morocco renewed belief. With Achraf Hakimi leading from the back and Azzedine Ounahi working tirelessly in midfield, Morocco frustrated the 2018 world champions for much of the first half. France dominated possession and territory, but clear-cut chances remained limited as the Atlas Lions defended with determination and organisation.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 60th minute.
After missing from the spot earlier in the match, Mbappé responded like the world-class forward he is, curling a superb finish beyond Bounou to break the deadlock and score his eighth goal of the tournament. The strike not only shifted the momentum decisively in France's favour but also strengthened Mbappé's osition in the race for the Golden Boot. Morocco attempted to respond by pushing more players forward, but their attacking ambition created spaces that France exploited with ruthless efficiency.

Just six minutes later, Ousmane Dembélé doubled France's advantage with a clinical finish after a flowing attacking move, leaving Morocco with a mountain to climb.

From that point onward, Didier Deschamps' side displayed the composure of seasoned title contenders. Dayot Upamecano and William Saliba kept Morocco's attackers under control, while goalkeeper Mike Maignan was rarely called into serious action as France comfortably protected their lead.

For Morocco, it was a disappointing end to another memorable World Cup campaign. Having again carried the hopes of African football into the knockout stage, they battled bravely but found themselves unable to break down one of the tournament's strongest defensive units. Head coach Mohamed Ouahbi admitted after the match that France had been the better team while praising his players for another campaign that demonstrated Morocco's continued growth on the world stage.

France, meanwhile, move into the last four with confidence growing at exactly the right time. Even after Mbappé's missed penalty, they never abandoned their game plan, patiently controlling possession before striking decisively in the second half. With Mbappé leading the attack and France finding their best form when it matters most, Les Bleus remain firmly on course for another World Cup final. Morocco leave the tournament with pride intact, but it is France who continue their pursuit of football's biggest prize.
