A world cup of memories

Published : Saturday, 11 July, 2026 at 12:00 AM
Every four years, a familiar excitement sweeps across the globe. Streets come alive, conversations revolve around predictions and rivalries, and millions of eyes remain fixed on two teams of eleven players chasing a single dream on the field. This year, forty-eight nations stand united by the same ambition of lifting football's most coveted trophy.

The FIFA World Cup has always been a celebration of passion, hope, heartbreak, and unforgettable moments that transcend borders, languages, and generations.

For many in Bangladesh, the World Cup is a collection of cherished memories stitched together by late-night matches, laughter echoing through the house, and the excitement of supporting a team with unwavering faith. Each tournament marks a different chapter of my life, reminding me not only of spectacular goals and dramatic victories but also of the people I shared those moments with.

As the tournament continues, every household rearranged their routines around late-night kick-offs, children bargain for a few extra hours before bedtime, and families gather in front of whichever screen they have whether it is a decades-old television in the corner of the living room or a small projector illuminating the match in a neighbourhood screen. Friends crowd into tea stalls, rooftops, and local cafés, where every goal is met with thunderous cheers and every missed opportunity with collective disbelief. For a month, ordinary evenings transform into celebrations filled with laughter, anticipation, and stories that become treasured memories.

The excitement only grows with Bangladesh's legendary divide between Argentina and Brazil supporters. Long before the opening match, streets are draped in blue-and-white stripes or bright yellow flags, balconies proudly display homemade banners, and conversations quickly turn into playful debates over which football giant will reign supreme. Good-natured teasing becomes part of everyday life, with friends, relatives, classmates, and even strangers exchanging jokes and predictions at every opportunity. Despite the fierce loyalty, these rivalries are built on mutual respect and affection. The celebrations, the friendly arguments, and even the heartbreak of defeat create a unique sense of togetherness that few other events can inspire.

In light of the current World Cup, I cannot help but look back at the 2022 FIFA World Cup Final, Argentina versus France. To this day, it remains the greatest football match I have ever witnessed. I was only sixteen years old, finally old enough to truly understand the beauty of the game and the emotions it could stir. I had always watched the World Cup with my family, but 2022 was different. It was the first tournament where I could fully appreciate every pass, every goal, every moment of suspense, and remember it all with remarkable clarity.

My father was supporting France, while I stood firmly behind Argentina. It was a school night, yet sleep was the last thing on our minds. We were armed with bowls of rice puffs mixed with chanachur, we settled into our seats as if we were about to witness history. Every time Argentina found the back of the net, I leapt from the sofa, celebrating while laughing at my father's disappointed expression. Moments later, whenever France answered with a goal, my father erupted in celebration, reminding me that the match was far from over. The ninety minutes felt like an emotional roller coaster, and when the game stretched into extra time before ending 3 - 3, our hearts were racing faster than ever.

Then came the penalty shootout. It felt as though the entire neighbourhood had fallen silent. Houses that had been echoing with cheers moments before were now holding their breath, every television tuned to the same decisive moment.

When Gonzalo Montiel scored the final penalty to seal Argentina's victory, the silence shattered into an explosion of celebration. The cheers were so loud they woke my mother from her sleep. Car horns echoed through the streets, people rushed outside waving flags, and fireworks lit up the night sky. My father smiled, admitted defeat with grace, and congratulated me, while I celebrated as though I had stepped onto the pitch myself alongside Lionel Messi and lifted the trophy.

Looking back now, I realize it was never just about Argentina winning the World Cup. It was about sharing those unforgettable hours with my family, laughing through every twist of the match, and becoming part of something much larger than ourselves. The streets filled with music, strangers congratulated one another regardless of which team they had supported, and the spirit of sportsmanship united an entire nation.

As the FIFA World Cup 2026 reaches its grand finale soon, another generation will create memories of their own.

Somewhere, a child will stay up far past bedtime with not a brink of sleep in his eyes, families will gather around televisions with bowls of snacks in hand, and friends will celebrate or console one another long after the final whistle. Years from now, the scoreline may fade from memory, but the laughter, the cheers that echoed through the streets, and the people who shared those moments will remain. That is the true magic of the World Cup that comes every four years. So as the matches continue, wear your colours with pride, cheer with all your heart, and cherish every second, because one day, this too will become a memory worth telling.
