Khelafat Majlis has called on the government to declare a ‘state of emergency’ in the country's inundated and marooned parts of the country’s 18 flooded districts including Greater Chattogram region mostly.
It has also stressed emergency services of rescue, relief and rehabilitation amid worsening flood conditions in the mostly flash-hit areas. In a joint statement on Friday, Khelafat Majlis Ameer Maulana Abdul Basit Azad and Secretary General Dr. Ahmad Abdul Qader expressed their deep concerns over the devastating floods triggered due to downpour and upstream flash floods rushing downstream.
They pointed out districts including Sylhet, Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Bandarban, Rangamati and Habiganj experienced colossal damages, with reported landslides, fatalities, submerged homes and irrecoverable destructions. Floods in these regions are rushing towards other districts as the flood situation is still continuing to deteriorate, the statement maintained.
The leaders said countless people are enduring severe hardship, while power outages and disrupted communication networks had intensified the humanitarian crisis in many affected areas.
They also appealed to people from all walks of life, regardless of political affiliation, to extend humanitarian assistance to flood victims. In particular, they called on leaders and activists of Khelafat Majlis and its affiliated organisations to stand beside the affected people with essential relief supplies.
