Argentina received sad news before their quarter-final against Switzerland. Former national team captain Antonio Ubaldo Rattin passed away on Saturday at the age of 89. Argentina took to the field wearing black armbands in mourning for his death. Both teams observed a minute of silence before the start of the match

The legendary midfielder's illustrious career in club and national team jerseys is still part of football history. He was one of the best captains in the history of Boca Juniors.

Rattin established himself as a hero during the club's golden era in the 1960s. At the same time, the midfielder was also a regular member of the Argentina national team. He played in the 1962 World Cup in Chile and the 1966 World Cup in England. However, his controversial sending-off in the 1966 World Cup remains one of the most talked-about incidents in football history.

Known as 'El Rata', Rattin was a symbol of fighting spirit, strong personality and leadership. He set a new standard for defensive midfielders at Boca Juniors, a path that would be followed by legends such as Ruben Suay, Blas Armando Giunta and Mauricio Serna.

Rattin wore only two jerseys in his entire professional career. Boca Juniors in club football, and the Argentina national team. This footballer, who came up through Boca's youth academy, made his debut at the age of 19. He then played in the blue-and-yellow jersey for 15 consecutive years.

He played 382 matches for the club, all of which he was in the starting eleven. He won the league in 1962, 1964 and 1965 and the Copa Argentina in 1969.

His consistent performances for Boca over a long period of time also made him a reliable face for the Argentina national team. He played 21 international matches for the national team from 1959 to 1969. Of these, five were in the World Cup and three in the Copa America. The midfielder also scored one goal for the national team.
