Dildar was a legendary comedian of Bengali cinema. His presence on screen meant pure entertainment for audiences. Through his versatile performance, he earned a place in millions of hearts. Although he was a comedian, he once took the challenge of playing a lead hero.

July 13 marks the death anniversary of this beloved actor. While remembering him, one of his famous films, ‘Abdullah’ comes to mind. The movie, directed by Tojammel Haque Bokul, faced deep skepticism and criticism before release. However, it became a major commercial success.

Bokul wanted Dildar as the hero from the start. Nevertheless, Dildar was hesitant at first. He thought, the audience would not accept him as a hero. Moreover, being a hero might damage his long-standing career.

Dildar jokingly told the director, ‘Are you trying to kick me in the stomach?’ The director pressed him, and eventually he agreed to take on the role.

Once the hero was cast, the director faced another challenge. He needed a lead actress. He approached top stars like Moushumi and Shabnur, but they showed no interest in starring opposite Dildar.

The director then contacted actress Nutan. She accepted the role without any hesitation. Many advised her not to do the film. They believed that audiences would reject a film with Dildar as the hero. They warned it could harm her career. Nutan ignored the critics and remained firm in her decision.

Even the cinema hall owners were anxious before the release. They questioned the risk of casting Dildar as a lead.

Yet, the audience silenced all doubts. 'Abdullah' received a massive response upon its release. It earned nearly 50 million BDT at the time, which was a remarkable success.

'Abdullah' is more than just a successful film. It is a unique example of breaking the conventional boundaries of Bengali cinema. Dildar proved that true talent wins the hearts of the audience in any role. Years after his passing, Dildar remains unforgettable. 'Abdullah' stands as a brilliant milestone in his career.
