American singer and actress Selena Gomez has said heavy nicotine vaping has changed her voice, warning others against taking up the habit.
According to a BBC report, the 34-year-old star made the remarks in a video posted on Instagram on Sunday, October 18.
“I don't think I'll ever get my voice back to the way it was,” Gomez said, adding that she had vaped a significant amount of nicotine.
She also spoke about the difficulty of quitting nicotine and urged people considering vaping to think twice.
“Quitting nicotine is really hard,” she said, warning that vaping was not worth the consequences. She added that she understood if people no longer liked the sound of her voice and had no objection if they chose not to listen to her music or speech.
Gomez has been living with lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease, for years. She has previously suggested that the condition affects her throat.
In December, responding to fans on Instagram, she said she sometimes experienced unusual symptoms, including swelling inside her throat.
In 2017, Gomez underwent a kidney transplant after her friend Francia Raisa donated one of her kidneys to her. The transplant helped address complications associated with lupus, although the disease later became active again.
In the 2022 documentary Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me, she revealed that her lupus had flared up again in 2020.
“I was diagnosed with lupus and I've been through chemotherapy,” she said in the documentary, describing a period when she withdrew from others until she felt mentally well enough to reconnect.
Lupus can cause a range of symptoms, including joint pain, fever, skin rashes, chest pain, hair loss, kidney problems and extreme fatigue.
Gomez's comments highlight her ongoing health challenges and the difficulties of nicotine dependence. While she has attributed changes in her voice to heavy vaping, she has also previously indicated that lupus may affect her throat.
