Gunfire over garbage bin dispute: Sanitation worker hospitalised

A sanitation worker was shot in the leg following a dispute over a garbage dumping bin in the New Market area under Vatara Police Station in the capital on Sunday night.

The victim, identified as Md Touhid, 28, was attacked around 8:30pm on Sunday (July 19). He is a resident of Kakuria Mashima village under Kalmakanda Police Station in Netrokona district and currently lives in the Vatara area of Dhaka.

According to Touhid’s colleague Kamrul, a dispute had been ongoing for several days between sanitation workers and a local group known as the “Helal Group” over the use of a garbage dumping point in the New Market area. On Sunday night, unidentified assailants suddenly opened fire in front of the dumping site, leaving Touhid injured with a bullet wound to his leg.

His colleagues rescued him and took him to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH). After initial treatment and medical examinations, doctors referred him to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR), commonly known as Pangu Hospital, at around 9:15pm for advanced treatment.

Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the DMCH Police Camp, confirmed that a man named Touhid had been brought to the hospital with a gunshot injury sustained in the Vatara New Market area. He said the victim received primary treatment at DMCH before being referred to Pangu Hospital, and the matter had been informed to the concerned police station.
