This year’s SSC and equivalent examinations have produced the worst results in nearly two decades, with the overall pass rate standing at 62.25 per cent.

The poor performance of candidates from the humanities has emerged as a major factor behind the sharp decline in this year’s SSC and equivalent examination results, according to Education Ministry statistics.

The pass rate among students who appeared from the humanities this year was only 48.74 per cent.

According to the data, more than 51 out of every 100 candidates who sat for the examination from the humanities failed.

Education board officials said students from this group had a higher failure rate. They were weak in English and mathematics. The high failure rate among humanities students affected the overall results of the SSC and equivalent examinations, leading to a decline in the average pass rate.

The number of students achieving GPA-5 also fell compared with the previous year.

Board chairmen made the remarks during the result announcement held at around 10AM on Monday at the conference room of the Secondary and Higher Education Division of the Ministry of Education at the Secretariat.
