World Cup 2026 has ended with Spain lifting the title for the second time. FIFA, football’s global governing body has now opened fan voting to choose the tournaments best XI.

Candidate list published on FIFA’s official website showcased five Argentine players. Although Scaloni’s Argentina lost the final to Spain, the team has representations across all four departments; goalkeeper, defense, midfield and attack.

Emiliano Martinez has, as expected, made the goalkeepers' list. Cristian Romero and Lisandro Martinez have been nominated as defenders. Enzo Fernandez represents the midfield. Lionel Messi is Argentina's lone representative in attack.

Messi was in brilliant form at the World Cup. Argentina's captain finished as the tournament's second-highest scorer. He scored 8 goals himself and set up 4 more for teammates. France captain Kylian Mbappe topped the list with 10 goals.

However, FIFA's candidate list has drawn criticism. Spain's two regular defenders, Pau Cubarsi and Aymeric Laporte, did not make the defenders' shortlist. Cubarsi's omission came as a particular shock, since he won the tournament's best young player award.

Players who have made the initial best XI shortlist:

Goalkeepers: Emiliano Martinez (Argentina), Vozinha (Cape Verde), Unai Simon (Spain), Jordan Pickford (England), Eloy Room (Curacao)

Defenders: Lisandro Martinez (Argentina), Nuno Mendes (Portugal), Marc Cucurella (Spain), Virgil van Dijk (Netherlands), Gabriel Magalhaes (Brazil), Cristian Romero (Argentina), Dayot Upamecano (France), Pedro Porro (Spain)

Midfielders: Jude Bellingham (England), Michael Olise (France), Vinicius Junior (Brazil), Enzo Fernandez (Argentina), Ousmane Dembele (France), Luka Modric (Croatia), Ismael Saibari (Morocco), Rodri (Spain), Lamine Yamal (Spain)

Forwards: Lionel Messi (Argentina), Kylian Mbappe (France), Erling Haaland (Norway), Harry Kane (England), Julian Quinones (Mexico), Mikel Oyarzabal (Spain)
