‘Godzilla’ actress Kaylee Hottle killed in car crash in US

Korean-American actress Kaylee Hottle, best known for her role as Jia in the Godzilla film series, has died in a road accident in the United States. She was 18 years old.

The accident took place early Tuesday morning in Frederick County, Maryland, according to the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities said a Honda Accord carrying two people veered off a two-lane road around 3:00am and crashed into a culvert. Hottle was one of the passengers in the vehicle.

Following the crash, Hottle was taken to a trauma centre, where doctors later pronounced her dead. The driver was injured and admitted to a hospital, but the injuries were not considered life-threatening.

The sheriff’s office said preliminary investigations suggested excessive speed was likely one of the contributing factors behind the crash.

Hottle made her big-screen debut in the 2021 blockbuster Godzilla vs. Kong, where she played Jia, a deaf orphan child from the Iwi tribe of Skull Island who communicates with Kong through sign language. She reprised the role in the 2024 sequel Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

For her performance in the sequel, Hottle received a nomination in the Best Performance by a Younger Actor category at the 2024 Saturn Awards.

Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Hottle was the daughter of an American father and a Korean mother. She was also born deaf and was a 12th-grade student at the Texas School for the Deaf in Austin, Texas.
