A Malaysian investor delegation has expressed strong interest in investing in Bangladesh's Debiganj Economic Zone in Panchagarh, with plans to explore the development of a 100-megawatt solar power plant alongside agro-based industries, officials said on Friday.
The delegation, led by Malaysian investor Mr. Sim, paid a courtesy call on State Minister for Water Resources Farhad Hossain Azad on Friday afternoon before visiting the Debiganj Economic Zone to assess its investment potential, industrial prospects, and employment opportunities.
Speaking to reporters after the visit, State Minister Farhad Hossain Azad said the government is working to attract both local and foreign investors to the region in line with the Prime Minister's directive to accelerate development in northern Bangladesh.
"We want industries to be established in this economic zone, creating employment opportunities for local people and contributing to the socio-economic development of the region," he said.
He added that the Malaysian investors had shown interest in developing a solar power project as well as setting up agro-based industries in the zone.
Mr. Sim described the Debiganj Economic Zone as a highly promising investment destination.
"Initially, we are evaluating the feasibility of establishing a 100MW solar power project here. If implemented, the project will contribute renewable energy to the national grid. We also see significant potential for agro-based industries in the area," he said.
Officials familiar with the project said the economic zone offers considerable advantages for industrial investment due to its improved road connectivity, easy access to agricultural raw materials, and comparatively lower production costs. The area is considered particularly suitable for agro-processing, food manufacturing, and export-oriented industries.
Local residents hope that the implementation of both domestic and foreign investment projects will create thousands of jobs in Debiganj and across Panchagarh district, while boosting industrialization and strengthening the local economy.
According to the Upazila Administration, an agreement was signed on August 24, 2020, between the district administration and the Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) to establish the Debiganj Economic Zone. Although the project was initially planned on 602.42 acres of land, it was later revised to 250.85 acres, including 240 acres for the economic zone and 10.85 acres for an access road.
So far, 185.86 acres have been allocated to BEZA, while the acquisition process for the remaining land is currently underway.
