EC to seek meeting with acting Speaker before announcing presidential election schedule

The Election Commission (EC) will soon seek a meeting with the acting Speaker of Parliament as part of the process for announcing the schedule for the presidential election, EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said on Sunday.

He made the remarks while speaking to reporters after leaving the Chief Election Commissioner's office at the EC headquarters in Agargaon. Earlier, the commission held discussions on the overall situation and administrative preparations for the presidential election.

Akhtar Ahmed said a formal meeting between the commission and the acting Speaker is required before the election schedule can be announced. A request for an appointment will be sent shortly, after which the commission will finalise the next steps.

In line with the established procedure, Chief Election Commissioner A MM Nasir Uddin is expected to pay a courtesy call on Acting Speaker Kaiser Kamal before the schedule is announced.

Earlier in the day, the chief election commissioner, election commissioners and the EC senior secretary held an unscheduled meeting at the CEC's office to review the legal provisions related to the presidential election. The meeting decided to seek the acting Speaker's time before proceeding with the schedule announcement.

Under the law, the President is elected by members of Parliament. The Parliament Secretariat will send the list of MPs to the EC Secretariat, which will prepare the electoral roll for the presidential election before announcing the election schedule.
