The Election Commission (EC) has sent a letter to the Acting Speaker of Parliament seeking a meeting to discuss the schedule for the 2026 presidential election.

EC sources said on Monday that no date has yet been fixed for the meeting.

In the letter, signed by EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed, the commission noted that President Md Shahabuddin resigned on July 24. Under Article 123(2) of the Constitution, a presidential election must be held within 90 days of the office becoming vacant.

The letter also cited the Presidential Election Act, 1991, which requires the EC to announce the election schedule in consultation with the Speaker through a gazette notification.

The EC requested the Acting Speaker to arrange a meeting at a convenient time. Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin is expected to attend the meeting along with the other election commissioners and senior officials of the EC Secretariat.

Under the Constitution, the President is elected by members of Parliament. The Parliament Secretariat will provide the list of MPs to the EC, which will prepare the electoral roll before announcing the election schedule.

Following Shahabuddin's resignation, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed assumed the role of Acting President, while Deputy Speaker Barrister Kaiser Kamal became the Acting Speaker.
