Students at Dhaka University’s (DU) residential halls found earthworms, blades and cockroaches in their canteen meals in recent weeks, exposing weak oversight in the university’s food system.

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall studentt Rafi Howlader found an earthworm in his chicken curry on July 21, one of several such complaints.

A blade turned up in food at Shahid Sergeant Zahurul Huq Hall’s canteen on July 5, prompting a brief shutdown; after reopening, students reported a cockroach on July 23 and another worm on July 25.

A blade was found at Jasimuddin Hall on July 16. CCTV footage suggested it had fallen from a sack-cutting tool during cooking.

“The canteen was fined TK 5,000”, said hall provost Dr. S M Arif Mahmud. Cigarette filters, rubber bands and banknotes have also surfaced in meals over time.

Haji Muhammad Muhsin Hall student Mamun Sarkar said that he suffered food poisoning after eating hall chicken and vegetables, but still eats there since outside dine-in costs more.

Nutritionist and DU Institute of Nutrition and Food Science (INFS) professor Dr. Abu Torab Md. Abdur Rahim said, “Hall meals fall well short of students’ daily calorie and protein needs”.

DUCSU general secretary and Islami Chattra Shibir publicity secretary S M Farhad admitted quality testing has stalled for lack of funding, warning of a ‘tough movement’ if there’s no progress within a week.

Pro-vice-chancellor (Administration) Dr. Mohammed Almujaddade Alfasane said, “Monitoring has been tightened and subsidies are under consideration”.
