Iran to buy over 400 Chinese-made MANPADS

Iran has agreed to purchase more than 400 Chinese-made man-portable air defence systems (MANPADS) as part of efforts to strengthen its air defence capabilities following its recent conflict with the United States, Reuters reported.

According to the report, the first shipment is expected to arrive in Iran within the next few weeks. The shoulder-fired systems are designed to launch missiles capable of targeting low-flying aircraft and drones, reports Reuters.

Reuters said Tehran has signed a deal worth between $60 million and $70 million to acquire 300 to 400 QW-12 and FN-16 MANPADS from China. The news agency described it as Iran's largest move to reinforce its short-range air defence network since the outbreak of the conflict involving the United States and Israel.

The report said the war exposed weaknesses in Iran's air defence system, leaving key military sites and critical infrastructure vulnerable to aerial attacks.

Reuters further reported that the procurement was arranged through Hong Kong-based Zhongqing Baoshang International Investment, which allegedly acted as an intermediary between Iranian authorities and Chinese suppliers.

China, however, dismissed the Reuters report as "baseless." The report also mentioned Pakistan's alleged involvement in the arms supply, a claim that Islamabad has also denied.
