A meeting regarding earthquake preparedness was held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the Cabinet Division in the Bangladesh Secretariat.
The meeting began at 4:00PM on Wednesday afternoon which focused on strengthening post-earthquake emergency response mechanisms and overall government readiness.
Detailed discussions were held on forming a national taskforce, preparing 100,000 volunteers in Dhaka and adjacent areas for post-earthquake emergency services, providing them with training, and supplying necessary equipment.
A database of 70,000 volunteers has already been prepared, and the remaining 30,000 will be mobilized soon.
The meeting decided to establish a specialized earthquake preparedness cell at the Prime Minister’s Office. Members also discussed implementing awareness programs to educate the public on disaster management.
Participants further deliberated on strategies to ensure effective coordination between public and private institutions during potential disasters, as well as the setup of a Humanitarian Staging Area (HSA) in Dhaka.
Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Asadul Habib Dulu, State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief M. Iqbal Hossain, State Minister for Health and Family Welfare Prof. Dr. M. A. Muheet, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister ABM Abdus Sattar, and Disaster Management and Relief Secretary Md. Saidur Rahman Khan, among others, were present at the meeting.
