Former minister Latif Siddiqui arrested in Shapla Chattar case

DB team of Dhaka Metropolitan Police detained former minister and veteran freedom fighter Abdul Latir Siddiqui from Gulshan area on Wednesday.

Detective Branch Joint Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (BD-north) Mohammad Kamruzzaman confirmed the arrest on Wednesday evening.

Earlier, former minister appeared before a court in Dhaka in connection with an anti-terrorism case filed with Shahbagh Police Station. 

He spoke with the journalists outside the court premises, stated that he learned an arrest warrant had been issued against him by International Crimes Tribunal (ICT). The case was filed over alleged killings and crimes against humanity during Hefazat-e-Islam’s assembly at Motijheel’s Shapla Chattar. 

He mentioned that if police did not arrest him beforehand, he planned to surrender before the tribunal next Sunday or Monday.

"I came to court today because I am accused in the Shahbagh anti-terrorism case; for which I was arrested in 2025. I do not hide; I always face the law. If police arrest me today, that is different. I am prepared this time. I have my bag, notebooks, and pens in my car," he told reporters prior to his arrest.
