Court grants five day remand for banned BSL leader Nibas Majumdar

A Dhaka court on Sunday placed Nibas Majumdar, a central assistant secretary of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and former vice-president of its Dhaka South unit, on a five-day police remand in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Manjurul Islam passed the order after hearing a 10 day remand plea submitted by the investigation officer. Nibas was arrested from the Pirerbagh area of Mirpur as a suspected accused.

Police had produced him before the court last Tuesday, seeking a 10 day remand. As the hearing could not be held that day, the court sent him to jail and fixed Sunday for the remand hearing. Defence counsel sought cancellation of the remand petition, while the prosecution opposed the plea. After hearing both sides, the court granted a five-day remand.

According to the case statement, on June 18, Nibas and 35-40 activists of the banned Awami League and Bangladesh Chhatra League allegedly brought out an unlawful procession near the Mohakhali Bus Terminal on Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Sarani under Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station. They are accused of chanting anti-government slogans, detonating crude explosives and carrying out activities aimed at creating public panic and destabilising the state.

Investigators told the court that preliminary interrogation and evidence indicate Nibas's active involvement in the incident. They also alleged that he used online platforms, including a Telegram group named "Sheikh Hasina Sainik Central", to organise members of the banned organisation. Police argued that further interrogation was necessary to uncover the full conspiracy, identify and arrest absconding suspects, and trace the source of the explosives allegedly used in the incident.
