Woman jailed in murder case; Journalists face intimidation over court video

A Dhaka court on Sunday sent a woman to jail after rejecting her bail petition in a murder case over the fatal beating of a man in Nawabganj nearly one and a half years ago.
Judge Shyam Sundar Roy of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 passed the order after accused Parveen surrendered before the court and sought bail.
According to the tribunal's bench assistant, Abul Kalam Azad, the court rejected the bail plea, noting that the case involves a murder charge and that the accused had previously abused bail by remaining absconding despite a court order directing her to surrender.
An unpleasant situation unfolded on the court premises after the order when relatives of the accused confronted journalists for filming Parveen as she was being taken to jail. The relatives later allegedly attempted to create a mob outside the Dhaka Deputy Commissioner's Office, pressured reporters to delete their footage, and surrounded them in protest.
According to the prosecution, Parveen had earlier secured bail from the High Court, which was subsequently upheld by the trial court. However, after the complainant sought cancellation of the bail, the District and Sessions Judge ordered her to surrender before the trial court. She remained absconding until surrendering on Sunday.
The case stems from the killing of Mokhlesur Rahman, who was allegedly beaten to death at Nayakanda Bazar in Nawabganj on February 11, 2023, following an altercation over a motorcycle.
The victim's wife, Bilkis Begum, filed the murder case with Nawabganj Police Station the following day.
Police submitted the charge sheet on August 31 last year against Parveen and 19 others. The court has fixed August 10 for the framing of charges.
