Dhaka hires Dubai law firm to challenge Benazir's bail 

Bangladesh has retained a Dubai law firm to challenge the conditional bail granted to former inspector general of police Benazir Ahmed, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said Sunday. A UAE court reportedly granted Benazir bail on the condition that he remain in the country and surrender his passport; the full terms are pending a certified copy of the order.

Benazir was arrested in Dubai after an Interpol red notice issued by the Anti‑Corruption Commission (ACC) on April 11, 2025. The UAE informed Dhaka of the arrest on June 12, and Bangladesh submitted a 144‑page dossier and a formal extradition request through diplomatic channels.

A Dubai hearing on July 27 reviewed the extradition documents; sources say Benazir was released on July 30 after completing legal procedures. Dubai police had earlier sought Bangladesh’s “in‑principle consent” to return him.

Bangladesh’s National Central Bureau (NCB) at Police Headquarters in Dhaka says it has no official confirmation of Benazir’s release. Assistant Inspector General AHM Shahadat Hossain said NCB officials told this correspondent that  they had no such information.

The ACC has filed six corruption cases against Benazir, including charges of illegal wealth acquisition, money laundering and passport fraud. One case is at trial; the others remain under investigation.

The government has appointed a law firm in Dubai to challenge the conditional bail granted to former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed by a Dubai court, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said on Sunday.

"We are trying to obtain a certified copy of the bail order. The Bangladesh government has appointed a law firm in Dubai to challenge the bail order," he added. History

The minister made the remarks while talking to reporters after a view-exchange meeting with officials and members of Rajshahi Range Police and Rajshahi Metropolitan Police at Rajshahi Police Lines in the afternoon.

"We have heard that Benazir Ahmed has been granted conditional bail by a Dubai court. We have spoken to Bangladesh's Ambassador in Dubai regarding the matter," he said.

On June 14, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed disclosed the development in Parliament. He said the UAE authorities informed the Bangladesh government of the arrest on June 12. In April 2025, Interpol issued a red notice against the former police chief.
