Curb Rising Prices of Essential Commodities

Published : Saturday, 8 August, 2026 at 12:00 AM
Letter To the Editor
Dear Sir,

The continuous rise in the prices of essential commodities has become one of the country's most pressing challenges. The soaring costs of rice, lentils, edible oil, onions, potatoes and other daily necessities are making life increasingly difficult for ordinary people. While incomes remain largely unchanged, household expenses continue to rise, placing immense pressure on low- and middle-income families.

Many households are now forced to borrow money to meet daily expenses, while others struggle to afford three meals a day. The rising costs of education and healthcare have further intensified their hardships, contributing to growing social frustration, instability and the risk of increased crime.

The government should strengthen market monitoring, dismantle dishonest business syndicates, expand the activities of the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), procure agricultural products directly from farmers, ensure transparency in production and supply chains, and take strict action against hoarding and artificial shortages. Prompt and effective measures can reduce public suffering and help restore stability.
