CU holds Senate meet

CHATTOGRAM, AUG 08: The 36th Senate meeting of Chittagong University (CU) was held on Saturday, with the university authorities informing the meeting that two development projects worth Tk 727 crore 48 lakh 21 thousand are awaiting approval from the Planning Commission.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Al-Forkan presented the information at the meeting, which he chaired.
He said all formal processes for the two proposed projects had been completed. Of the total proposed expenditure, Tk 49 crore 33 lakh 67 thousand has been earmarked for establishing a TSC Complex, while Tk 678 crore 14 lakh 54 thousand has been proposed under the project titled ‘Academic and Infrastructural Development and Research Capacity Enhancement of Chittagong University’.

The VC said initiatives had been taken under the projects to strengthen the university’s academic, research and infrastructural capacity.

The proposed facilities include a TSC complex, academic building, research management complex, administrative building, water treatment and supply system, and power infrastructure.

The development programme also includes five 10-storey male halls and five 10-storey female halls for students. Residential facilities for foreign students and PhD and MPhil researchers, multiple academic buildings, a blue-economy research centre, a central museum, a stadium and swimming pool, a modern hospital and a day-care centre are also planned.

Professor Al-Forkan said two more development project proposals had been formulated, involving around Tk 50 crore, to renovate old university buildings and facilities and make them usable.

He expressed hope that implementation of the proposed projects would boost the university’s academic and research activities while enhancing its infrastructural capacity.

Senate Member Dr Mohammad Manjur-ul-Amin Chowdhury, Chattogram Divisional Commissioner Dr Md Ziauddin, Dhaka University Professor Dr Zahida Shulshan, Bangladesh Rice Research Institute Director General Dr Md Rafiqul Islam, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology Professor Dr Nilufa Akhtar, Jahangirnagar University Professor Dr Prithila Nazneen Neelima and Registered Graduate SM Fazlul Haque, among others, attended the meeting.
