Govt making all out efforts to tackle energy crisis: PM Tarique Rahman

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said the government is making all-out efforts to address the country’s ongoing electricity, gas and fuel crisis, blaming previous unplanned decisions for creating the problems in the energy sector.
“We are making our utmost efforts to protect the country and its people from the crisis,” the prime minister said while addressing a doctors’ rally at the LD Hall of the Jatiya Sangsad on Saturday.
The rally was organised to mark the 37th founding anniversary of the Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB).
Tarique said the government was aware that people were currently facing shortages of electricity, gas and fuel. He said the country was now paying the price for what he described as unplanned initiatives taken in the past to provide special benefits to certain institutions.
“The government has not denied that the people are currently facing an electricity, gas and fuel crisis,” he said.
The prime minister said his government had inherited a fragile situation and had already begun taking measures to overcome the various crises.
He said plans were being formulated to gradually bring people out of the gas, electricity and fuel crisis.
Tarique also alleged that beneficiaries of fascism remained active in the state, politics and administration and were attempting to destabilise the country’s energy and power sectors.
“They are actively trying to destabilise the country’s energy and power sectors in various ways,” he said, adding that misleading information was also being spread about the sectors.
Earlier, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and his wife, Dr Zubaida Rahman, planted neem and arjun saplings on the premises of the LD Hall at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.
The prime minister then formally inaugurated the doctors’ rally by hoisting the national and party flags and releasing balloons and pigeons.
The programme began with recitation from the Holy Quran followed by a munajat. Doctors and leaders of the DAB from different parts of the country attended the gathering.
DAB President Prof Dr Harun Al Rashid chaired the programme.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Dr Zubaida Rahman, Social Welfare Minister Prof Dr AZM Zahid Hossain, Health Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain and DAB Secretary General Dr Md Zahirul Islam Shakil, among others, addressed the rally.
In his speech, the prime minister also highlighted the government’s plans for the health sector. He said the government had decided to recruit 100,000 new health workers across the country to raise awareness among citizens and provide primary healthcare services.
He said doctors would have to play a leading role in properly training the new health workers.
Tarique said the government had begun implementing practical plans to make the education, health and energy sectors self-sufficient and sustainable.
He also said the government had allocated the second-highest budget ever for the health sector and planned to gradually raise health-sector spending to 5 percent of GDP over the next five years.
