Gold, cigarettes and 113kg of Gauri cream seized from Dubai, Delhi returnees

Customs officials have seized 99 grams of gold jewellery, 181 cartons of foreign cigarettes, 113 kilograms of prohibited Gauri cream and five mobile phones from the baggage of several passengers arriving from Dubai and Delhi at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka. The seized goods are estimated to be worth Tk 5.57 million.
The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) conducted the seizures during separate baggage searches at the airport, according to a press release issued by the National Board of Revenue (NBR) on Sunday (August 9).
Officials from CIID’s C-Shift carried out special searches on passengers arriving on different flights based on intelligence information, passenger profiling and close surveillance.
A search of the baggage of Mehedi Hasan, a passenger arriving from Dubai on Emirates flight EK0582, led to the recovery of 149 cartons of foreign cigarettes and 40 kilograms of Gauri cream.
Another passenger on the same flight, Mohammad Abdul Qayyum, was found carrying 99 grams of gold jewellery, 10 cartons of cigarettes and three kilograms of Gauri cream.
Meanwhile, customs officials searched the baggage of Mohammad Nawaz Sharif, a passenger arriving from Delhi on Air India flight AI237, and seized 70 kilograms of Gauri cream and four smartphones.
In total, the separate operations resulted in the seizure of 99 grams of gold jewellery, 181 cartons of foreign cigarettes, 113 kilograms of Gauri cream and five mobile phones.
According to CIID, the combined estimated market value of the seized goods is Tk 5,574,500.
The agency said the operations were carried out after identifying high-risk passengers and flights through intelligence gathering, passenger profiling and intensive surveillance.
