Tarique Rahman unlikely to attend BRICS Summit in Delhi

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is unlikely to attend the outreach session of the BRICS summit in the New Delhi which is scheduled for September 12-13.

The decision came amid diplomatic tensions between Dhaka and New Delhi, according to high-level government sources.

Earlier, Indian PM Narendra Modi invited PM Tarique Rahman to attend the outreach session of the summit. Ministry of Foreign Affairs received the official diplomatic note through the Indian High Commission in Dhaka on July 14.

However, government sources confirmed that PM Tarique’s attending the sessions has effectively vanished as outsed AL leader Sheikh Hasina was allowed to directly interact with journalists in New Delhi.

The BRICS outreach session generally hosts leaders from selected non-member states and regional bodies. Tarique Rahman received the invitation in his capacity as the current chairman of BIMSTEC.

Diplomatic sources said both nations are seeking ways to normalize ties to prevent the recent friction from turning into a prolonged crisis. Both sides remain in contact to rebuild mutual trust and outline future steps.

Meanwhile, newly appointed Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi is scheduled to make his first courtesy call on Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Monday.

He is also expected to hold a meeting with Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman on Sunday. Discussions are likely to focus on the recent diplomatic strain and the future of bilateral relations.
