8 Bangladeshis die in Maldives within 10 days

Eight Bangladeshi nationals died in the Maldives within 10 days between July 25 and August 3, raising concern among the Bangladeshi expatriate community.

According to the Bangladesh High Commission, the deceased were aged between 21 and 70. Four died of strokes, one of heart disease, two in workplace accidents, and one death was suspected to be suicide.

The deceased were identified as Rabiul Islam Roshan, 23; Humayun Kabir, 45; Mokbul Mia, 47; Sheikh Farid, 45; Sulaiman Matabbar, 21; Syed Molla, 44; Badiur Rahman, 37; and Delwara Nabi, 70.

Rabiul died in a workplace accident on July 25. Humayun and Mokbul died of strokes on July 27 and 28, respectively. Sheikh died after a diabetes-related stroke on July 30. On August 1, Sulaiman died after accidentally ingesting toxic thinner at work, while Syed died of a stroke and Badiur of heart disease. Delwara died of a heart-related condition on August 3.

Bangladesh High Commission First Secretary Muttasim Billah said five bodies have already been repatriated, while arrangements are underway to send the remaining bodies home.

He urged Bangladeshi expatriates in the Maldives to remain conscious of their health.

Bangladeshis are among the largest expatriate communities in the Maldives, where 196,024 foreign nationals live, according to government statistics.
