Govt rejects claims of special benefits in fuel policy

The government has rejected media and social media reports about a draft policy allowing private-sector imports of refined fuel as “fabricated and untrue”.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources on Saturday (August 8), the ministry said the reports were creating unnecessary confusion among the public.

The ministry said it is preparing a draft titled Policy on the Import, Storage, Transportation, Distribution and Marketing of Refined Petroleum Products by the Private Sector, 2026 to ensure uninterrupted and secure fuel supplies.

The proposed policy aims to strengthen energy security and establish a more transparent and competitive fuel market. Opinions and recommendations from stakeholders will be considered before a final decision is made, the ministry said.

It also rejected allegations that the policy would provide special benefits to any particular individual, company or group.

Earlier, the Energy and Mineral Resources Division instructed Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) to submit the draft policy by August 10. The proposed framework is intended to facilitate private-sector participation in the import and marketing of refined fuel while ensuring uninterrupted supply.
