BOU supports student who lost eyesight after train stone attack

Bangladesh Open University (BOU) has provided medical assistance to an HSC first-year student who lost vision in his right eye after being struck by a stone thrown at a moving train.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Siddiqur Rahman Khan handed over a cheque for medical expenses to the student’s father at the university’s Dhaka office on Tuesday.

According to the university’s public relations office, Md Sabbir Hossain was travelling from Panchagarh to Dhaka on the Drutajan Express on July 21 when an unidentified person threw a stone at the moving train. The stone struck his head and right eye, severely damaging the eye.

Doctors said there was little chance of restoring vision in the affected eye. Sabbir also suffered a serious head injury.

He was taken off the train at Jamtail Railway Station and given initial treatment before being transferred to the National Institute of Ophthalmology and Hospital in Dhaka, where he is still receiving treatment.

The vice-chancellor said BOU would continue to support Sabbir as much as possible during his treatment and wished him a speedy recovery.
