The Bangladesh Government Officers and Employees Welfare Association has demanded that the proposed minimum salary under the 9th National Pay Scale be increased, warning against any reduction in the recommended amount.

In a statement signed by its president Abdul Malek and secretary general Ashikul Islam on Saturday, the association said it would not accept any cut to the proposed minimum salary of Tk 20,000.

The association said reports in the media indicate that the secretary committee has recommended a 100 per cent increase in salaries for lower grades. Under the proposal, the current basic salary of Tk 8,250 would rise to Tk 16,500.

It said previous pay scales had provided for salary increases of 140 per cent or more for employees in grades 10 to 20, making the current proposal inadequate.

The association also said that after a prolonged gap and repeated demands from employees, the 9th pay scale is being introduced amid a sharp rise in the prices of essential commodities.

It claimed that employees had demanded a minimum salary of Tk 35,000 during consultations with the National Pay Commission 2025, citing the mismatch between income and the rising cost of living. However, the proposed minimum salary was reduced to Tk 20,000, it said.

The association urged the secretary committee and the Cabinet to increase the proposed minimum salary further and issue the new pay structure through a gazette as soon as possible.
