President Donald Trump on Tuesday (August 18) posted a map on his ‘Truth Social’ which featured the strategic waterway - ‘Strait of Hormuz’ as part of United States territory.
The post comes after Trump stated on Friday that Washington could claim the strait once its conflict with Tehran concludes. Speaking at a police academy in New York, he said he plans to declare the waterway a US territory soon after defeating Iran. He also linked the territorial claim to the ongoing US naval blockade. The Medialine reported.
Iranian officials dismissed Trump's remarks as nonsense. Tehran continues to block passage through the narrow choke point, which handles 20 per cent of global oil and gas transport. Meanwhile, the US maintains its naval blockade to exert economic pressure on Iran.
Despite complications, negotiations between Iran and Oman over the waterway remain ongoing. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei confirmed on Monday that talks are proceeding seriously, though outside actors are creating delays. His remarks follow recent optimism regarding a potential agreement between Tehran and Muscat to secure passage through the strait.
