30 killed in gold mine collapse in Central African Republic

At least 30 miners have been killed in a gold mine collapse in the Central African Republic (CAR), a landlocked country in Central Africa. Several other workers remain trapped inside the mine.

The incident occurred on Tuesday morning local time located in the Abba area of Nana-Mambéré prefecture.

according to a miner, the chances of rescuing most of the trapped workers alive are slim. The exact number of workers still trapped remains unclear.

Nana-Mambere Deputy Mayor Souleimane B told AFP that rescue teams recovered the bodies of 30 miners and rescued several others alive and injured after working throughout the day. The injured workers are being treated at a local hospital.

“It was a terrible incident. We sent rescue teams and also sought help from local residents. Many people responded to our call and assisted us in the rescue operation,” he said.

Video footage taken at the scene showed a chaotic rescue effort. In one video, mud-covered miners, most of them young men and women, could be seen pulling a body out of the pit.

Government spokesman Evariste Ngamana expressed sympathy to the families of those killed and said the authorities were “working diligently to provide relief and assistance to those affected.”

Mine collapses are not uncommon at small-scale mines in the Central African Republic. The country has hundreds of small-scale gold mines, where many people work as miners.
