India seeks a constructive and positive relationship with Bangladesh, official spokesperson of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs Randhir Jaiswal said at a regular weekly briefing in New Delhi on Tuesday (August 18).

He added that India is reviewing Bangladesh's request to supply additional energy.

Responding to a query regarding Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's potential trip, the spokesperson said there was no new information to share and updates would be provided once available. He noted that a warm invitation for a visit to India has already been extended to the Bangladeshi Prime Minister.

In a previous briefing, Jaiswal had stated that India invited the Prime Minister of Bangladesh for a bilateral visit alongside an invitation to participate in the outreach session of the BRICS summit. He added that these invitations had already been conveyed.

Regarding energy assistance amid Bangladesh's ongoing crisis, the spokesperson highlighted India's positive approach. He mentioned that India maintains an ongoing diesel supply agreement with Bangladesh which continues.

He explained that any additional diesel requests will be evaluated considering India's domestic requirement, refining capacity, and overall availability.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh government clarified its position regarding Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's potential trip. Foreign Ministry statements noted that a conducive environment must be established before any visit takes place, a stance clearly communicated to Indian authorities.

The government stated that public media comments made by Sheikh Hasina in New Delhi on August 5 damaged the existing atmosphere surrounding the potential trip. Consequently, Bangladesh is prioritizing mutual trust and a favorable environment before proceeding with further steps.

The statement reaffirmed that Bangladesh will uphold its "Bangladesh First" policy to advance friendly bilateral relations with neighbors and other states based on sovereign equality, national dignity, non-interference in internal affairs, and mutual interest.
