Iran will respond in kind if the United States uses nuclear weapons against the country, an Iranian lawmaker has warned, according to local Iranian media.

Fada Hossein Maleki, a member of Iran’s parliamentary National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, made the remarks in an interview with Khabar Online on Wednesday. Asked about the possibility of a US nuclear strike on Iran, Maleki said he could not rule out the possibility of US President Donald Trump taking a reckless step, although he did not believe Trump would go that far because such an action could push the world into a dangerous war.

“If America takes such a step, Iran will respond appropriately. Whatever type of weapon is used against Iran, our response will be in the same manner,” Maleki said.

Asked specifically whether Iran would use nuclear weapons in response to a US nuclear attack, Maleki reiterated that Iran would respond with the same type of weapon used against it. He did not directly comment on whether Iran possesses nuclear weapons.

Warning Washington against further military action, Maleki said Iran has a range of options and that its response could be equal in scale or even harsher. He also claimed that much of Iran’s military capability and weaponry has not been publicly revealed, saying Tehran had shifted from a defensive posture to an active deterrence strategy.

On stalled negotiations between Tehran and Washington, Maleki accused Trump of failing to honour commitments made under a memorandum of understanding between the two countries. He said Iran would not return to negotiations unless Washington fulfilled its previous commitments, adding that otherwise issues including the Strait of Hormuz would remain unresolved.

Regarding Iran’s talks mediated by Oman, Maleki said they were a separate bilateral matter and that Tehran had rejected a proposal for US participation.

Iran and the United States reportedly signed a memorandum of understanding in mid-June, with Pakistan acting as a mediator, in an effort to end the conflict and pave the way for a final agreement. However, talks later stalled over disagreements regarding implementation of the memorandum and issues related to the Strait of Hormuz.

Tensions in the Middle East escalated after the United States and Israel jointly launched attacks on Iran on February 28. Tehran subsequently launched retaliatory attacks against Israel and US targets in the region, according to Anadolu.
