
DINAJPUR, Aug 19: Satish Chandra Roy, a presidium member of Awami League and former primary and mass education minister, died on Tuesday night. He was 95.
He breathed his last at 10:05pm while undergoing treatment for various health complications. His eldest son, Arbindu Roy, confirmed his death. Roy is survived by his wife, three sons and two daughters, along with numerous relatives, political associates and admirers.
His funeral and last rites were on Wednesday at the family cremation ground in Mostafabad Village under Mangalpur Union No. 9 of Biral Upazila in the district.
Born on November 30, 1941 in Mostafabad village, Satish Roy became involved in politics during his student life. He began his professional career as a teacher but later turned to politics and went on to establish himself as a prominent leader of AL.
Roy served as a member of parliament several times. He was first elected from Dinajpur-7 constituency in 1979 parliamentary election.
He later contested as AL candidate from Dinajpur-2 constituency and was elected in 1986, 1991 and 1996 JS polls.
In 1996 election, he secured 55,551 votes from the constituency. After AL formed the government under Sheikh Hasina in 1996, Roy was initially appointed state minister for fisheries and livestock. He was later given charge of the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education as minister.
