Outgoing Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General and presidential candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir broke down in tears multiple times while delivering his farewell speech at the party's parliamentary meeting.
He emotionally appealed to party lawmakers for their prayers and asked for their votes in the presidential election. His speech created an emotional atmosphere in the meeting room, leaving Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman moved as well.
The parliamentary party meeting took place in the government party room of the National Parliament Bhaban. Chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, the meeting lasted for about an hour and a half.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman urged party MPs to cast their votes in favor of Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. He also cautioned lawmakers to maintain party unity ahead of upcoming local government elections and prevent any distance from forming with grassroots workers.
BNP Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni delivered the welcome address, explaining the voting mechanics to lawmakers and requesting their support for Mirza Fakhrul. He noted that Mirza Fakhrul would cast his vote in the presidential election and that his Thakurgaon-3 parliamentary seat would become vacant upon assuming the presidency.
Addressing his colleagues, Mirza Fakhrul recalled the late BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and expressed deep gratitude to party founder and former President Ziaur Rahman, as well as party Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
Reflecting on his tenure as senior joint secretary general, acting secretary general, and secretary general, Mirza Fakhrul asked for forgiveness for any unintentional mistakes or offense given during his service.
He pledged to safeguard the honor entrusted to him by the party, even at the cost of his life, and affirmed that he would make no compromises regarding the nation's independence and sovereignty.
Expressing that he would miss his colleagues after moving to Bangabhaban, Mirza Fakhrul requested prayers and urged lawmakers to support his candidacy. Lawmakers present noted that he broke down four to five times during his brief address, adding to the poignant tone of the meeting.
