State Minister for Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Nurul Haque Nur has called for political consensus on banning Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir if necessary, alleging that the organisation could become a “bigger fascist” than the Awami League if given the opportunity.
“Awami League got the opportunity to become a fascist, and that’s why it happened. Jamaat-Shibir didn’t get that opportunity, and that’s why it couldn’t happen,” he said.
Nur made the remarks while visiting Gana Odhikar Parishad activist Sohanur Rahman Sohan, who was injured in a clash with supporters of Jamaat MP Amir Hamza in Kushtia, at Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Thursday.
He alleged that Jamaat-Shibir had become an “oppressive organisation” despite having faced repression during the Awami League regime.
“After the mass uprising, it was expected that the partners who were oppressed during the period of fascism would all come together to build a united Bangladesh. But we have seen that Jamaat-e-Islami has developed a desire for power,” Nur said.
He alleged that Jamaat activists had attacked Gana Odhikar Parishad leaders and activists in Kushtia and said Sohan suffered a broken nasal bone and underwent surgery.
“Today, this Jamaat-Shibir has brutally attacked our leaders and activists in Kushtia with their MPs to show their strength,” he said.
