Popular American singer and actress Selena Gomez and her mental health startup Wondermind are facing a lawsuit from five investors who allege they were misled about the company’s financial health, business prospects and Gomez’s role in the venture.

According to a report by CNN, the investors filed the lawsuit Thursday, claiming they invested a combined $1.2 million in Wondermind in 2022.

Wondermind was launched in 2021 with Gomez as a co-founder. She also served as the company’s chief impact officer and head of marketing. The startup aimed to promote mental wellness by offering simple tools and resources that people could use to support their mental health.

The investors allege that they were encouraged to invest based in part on Gomez’s fame and large social media following, which they believed could help the company grow significantly.

However, the lawsuit claims that Wondermind experienced serious financial and organizational problems over the following years, while investors were not adequately informed about the company’s difficulties.

The investors also allege that they were told about several potential business opportunities, including partnerships with major companies, advertising deals, celebrity magazine features and plans for a new app. According to the lawsuit, those initiatives either never materialized or were not completed.

The lawsuit states that Wondermind was valued at $95 million in 2022, giving investors the impression that the company had strong commercial potential. The investors later discovered what they describe as serious problems within the business.

The plaintiffs say they learned more about Wondermind’s internal difficulties through an investigative report published by The Cut last year. The report also detailed alleged power struggles and tensions involving relationships within the company.

Gomez’s attorney has strongly denied the allegations, calling them completely baseless.

In a statement to CNN, the attorney said there is no factual or legal basis for claims that Gomez was involved in fraud or any other wrongdoing. The legal team said it intends to fight the allegations and seek dismissal of the lawsuit.

Gomez’s mother, Tiffi Gomez, and former business partner Daniella Pierson are also named as defendants. The investors are seeking the return of their investment, damages and reimbursement of legal fees.

The lawsuit also contains a separate allegation involving Pierson. According to the complaint, Tiffi Gomez allegedly told investors that Pierson had used part of the investors’ money to pay rent on her New York home, which reportedly cost about $60,000 a month.

Pierson, who left Wondermind in 2023, has denied the allegation.

The claims in the lawsuit remain allegations and have not been proven in court.
