The second installment of 'Michael', the biopic about pop icon Michael Jackson, is expected to explore the controversies surrounding the singer in the 1990s, including allegations of child sexual abuse that were not featured in the first film.
Jaafar Jackson, Michael Jackson’s nephew who portrays the pop star in the biopic, recently discussed the script and storyline of the planned sequel in an interview. Although he does not have direct control over the screenplay, Jaafar said he hopes the second film will present Michael’s perspective more clearly, particularly regarding the final years of his life.
“This is someone else’s story. It’s how someone else saw it, largely driven by a particular purpose or agenda,” Jaafar said, according to the interview. He added that, as a family, they had long felt that Michael’s own perspective had not been heard, and that presenting it to audiences was important.
The first film covers Michael’s career from his early years through the release of his 1987 album 'Bad'. As a result, several major controversies from the later part of his life were left out of the first installment.
Jaafar said the first film focuses on Michael’s roots and his journey before he achieved global success and became an icon. He expressed hope that the sequel would provide a deeper understanding of Michael as a person during the period from the 1990s until his death.
He also said the second film would further explore Michael’s personality, including his kindness and compassion toward others despite the controversies and challenges he faced.
Jaafar said Michael never lost his belief in people’s goodness or his willingness to treat others with kindness, regardless of how he was treated or what was said about him.
The biopic 'Michael' has reportedly grossed more than $1 billion worldwide. The first installment ends with the period surrounding the release of 'Bad', while the first allegations of child sexual abuse against Michael Jackson emerged in 1993 and were not included in the film’s storyline.
