The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has launched a week-long film festival to showcase the capital’s history, heritage and diverse culture to the younger generation.

The festival, titled ‘Hridoye Dhaka-416’, began at Madhumita Hall in Motijheel on Saturday.

The opening ceremony also featured awards for eminent film personalities, technicians, journalists and historic cinema halls in recognition of their contributions to preserving Dhaka’s rich past and cultural heritage.

Prime Minister’s Political Adviser Zahir Uddin Swapan praised the initiative, saying its impact would be far-reaching.

Referring to the decline in the number of cinema halls, he said more than 850 halls once operated across the country, but the number has now fallen sharply. He attributed changes in audience preferences partly to the widespread use of smartphones and modern multimedia and urged filmmakers to consider viewers’ tastes while making films.

He also said the government would provide necessary policy support to the sector.

State Minister for Cultural Affairs Ali Newaz Mahmud Khaiyam said the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Ministry of Cultural Affairs would work together through a memorandum of understanding to revitalise Bangladesh’s film industry.

DSCC Administrator Abdus Salam said cinema has a deep connection with Dhaka’s history and heritage. He said the festival was organised to promote the capital’s rich history and culture at home and abroad.

He invited city residents to enjoy films free of charge at Madhumita Hall with their families and loved ones over the next seven days.

Dhaka-7 MP Hamidur Rahman, Feni-1 MP Rafiqul Alam Majnu and others attended the event.
