The Bangladesh Janata Party (BJP) has sought a fresh review of its application for registration with the Election Commission (EC), citing prolonged imprisonment, political persecution and damage to its organisational activities.
Party founder and president Mithun Chowdhury submitted the application to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A.M.M. Nasir Uddin on Sunday (August 23).
Chowdhury said the party had previously applied several times for registration and submitted the required party and organisational documents. The EC had informed the party through a memorandum on March 19, 2025, that the matter had been disposed of. However, he said the party was now seeking reconsideration in light of the current circumstances and the special situation prevailing in the country.
In the application, Chowdhury claimed that he had faced prolonged political and legal difficulties for his political activities during the previous government. He said several cases, including sedition charges, had been filed against him and that he had spent nearly five years in jail without trial. The prolonged imprisonment and legal cases, he claimed, severely disrupted his political and organisational activities.
He further claimed that his political and party offices had been vandalised and that various organisational documents and assets were damaged. Even after being released from the cases, he said, continued pressure and adverse circumstances made it difficult to resume normal political and organisational activities. He also claimed that he had to remain in hiding abroad for an extended period to avoid re-arrest.
Chowdhury said reports and photographs of various incidents of political harassment and his imprisonment had been published in national and local newspapers at the time. He also said photographs showing law enforcement agencies taking him into custody, along with relevant news reports, had been published by different newspapers.
“Copies of those newspaper reports and photographs have been attached to the application as supporting documents,” he said.
The application urged the Election Commission to reconsider the Bangladesh Janata Party’s registration issue along with the submitted documents and take necessary steps, while placing the matter before the commission for favourable consideration.
