A Dhaka court on Monday placed Kakon Rana on a six-day remand in a case filed over alleged blackmail and fraud using the names and photographs of Prime Minister’s wife Dr Zubaida Rahman and her Assistant Private Secretary-2 (APS-2) Engineer Abdur Rahman Sani on social media. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Joshita Islam passed the order after hearing a seven-day remand plea by police.

According to the investigation, several fake Facebook accounts and pages allegedly using the names of the APS-2, Dr Zubaida Rahman and Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Rumon were found logged in on Rana’s mobile phone.

Police said Rana had initially admitted to creating fake accounts. Investigators sought his remand to determine the motive, identify other members of the alleged fraud network and recover additional digital devices and SIM cards.

The case was filed with Banani Police Station on August 23 under the Cyber Security Act on behalf of Abdur Rahman Sani. The complaint alleges that a group had created fake Facebook profiles using Sani’s name and photographs and used them to contact people, make false promises and engage in blackmail and fraud.
