Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has blamed internal rivalries among armed groups for the recent unrest in Sajek, Rangamati, saying the law and order situation has come under control.
Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat on Sunday (October 25), he said competing factions in the Chittagong Hill Tracts were seeking to establish control over different areas, particularly during the tourist season.
The minister cited internal disputes involving the Parbatya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (JSS), the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) and other factions as contributing to the tensions.
He said the government, Bangladesh Army and local authorities were working to maintain peace, while political discussions and consultations with local leaders continued to ease the situation.
Earlier, more than 2,000 tourists were stranded in Sajek amid protests and road blockades. Security forces later escorted them to safety, but gunfire targeted a security convoy along the Khagrachhari-Sajek road during the operation.
Authorities subsequently suspended tourist travel to Sajek and formed a three-member committee to resolve the situation through dialogue with protesters.
