A single-shot pistol and a round of ammunition have been recovered from a char in the Padma River in Rajshahi, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) said on Tuesday.
A BGB team recovered the firearm from the Sonaikandi Border Outpost (BOP) area during an operation early Tuesday.
According to a press release issued by Rajshahi Battalion (1 BGB) in the afternoon, the force received intelligence that a group of smugglers would attempt to illegally bring firearms across the border.
Following the information, BGB increased surveillance along the border and set up ambushes at several points. At around 3:00 AM, an operational team spotted two suspected smugglers crossing the international border into Bangladesh in the Padma River char area under the Sonaikandi BOP.
When the BGB team chased them, the suspects dropped a cloth-wrapped shopping bag and fled towards India.
The team later searched the area and recovered a single-shot pistol and one round of ammunition. The firearm and ammunition were handed over to Damkura Police Station for legal action, the press release said.
