Pakistan imposes emergency rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

The federal government of Pakistan has imposed emergency rule in the northern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), effectively ousting the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) administration following weeks of political escalation and long marches.
President Asif Ali Zardari formally approved the declaration of emergency on Sunday (October 11) acting on the advice of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
The executive action follows a high-level federal cabinet meeting chaired by Shehbaz Sharif, during which senior officials briefed the premier on deteriorating security and political conditions in the province.
Following the briefing, the cabinet advised the President to invoke his constitutional powers under Articles 232 and 233 of the Constitution of Pakistan to suspend the provincial government, impose Governor’s Rule, and curb specific fundamental rights.
Addressing the cabinet, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif asserted that the federal government would not allow the opposition party to destabilize the national economy through persistent street protests and agitations.
The provincial government had been led by Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, whose PTI administration spearheaded a long march heading toward Islamabad from October 5 to demand the immediate release of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Khan, who was ousted in a parliamentary no-confidence motion in April 2022, has been incarcerated since mid-2023 under multiple convictions.
With emergency rule now in effect, all political activities across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have been suspended, and federal control has been established through the governor’s office.
